Identifying Profitable ClickBank Affiliate Programs

by Graham McKenzie on January 2, 2010

Tens of thousands of website owners dream of life-changing profits from affiliate marketing. Anyone with a home computer, a talent for sales, and a few dollars can start a profitable at-home business that will quickly pave the way to financial independence. The center of the Internet universe for affiliate marketers is Clickbank, the hub of the web for picking up digital products to sell for serious coin. The only problem is, there are over 10,000 products in the Clickbank Marketplace. How can you possibly choose the products that will work best for you?

The first thing to take in mind is that Clickbank generates objective estimates of potential profitability. Clickbank can tell you how well a product is likely to do regardless of how it is written, presented, or shipped. All of these factors are just numbers that tell you whether a product fills an immediate need. Which products fill immediate needs? How about an ebook on how to train your dog? Make money online? A digital guide on how make up after you break up or hit it big playing lotto? The products that sell on Clickbank are products that offer a credible answer to a pressing question, products that give the buyer relief right now.

You also need to consider whether the product you are considering preselling is presented by its Publisher in ways that sell. Is the Publisher’s page beautifully designed, filled with information, attractive and compelling? Or is the page cluttered with typos and bad grammar? No matter how good a job you do preselling the product, if the Publisher page is a turn-off, you will never get your commissions on the sale.

The third thing to consider is whether other affiliates have been able to turn a profit on the book. Clickbank provides a set of tools to help you decide which products will work for you. For instance, the gravity score will tell you how many affiliates have sold at least one copy of a product in the last six weeks. If the gravity score is high, there is so much interest in the product that different approaches from different affiliate marketers still work. That means your page is more likely to work right away. Clickbank will also tell you the average earnings per sale made by these affiliates. If gravity is low and the percentage sold by affiliates is high, on the other hand, you can walk away knowing overall sales are probably pretty low.

Ultimately, the best judgment of which products will generate the most profits for you has to be based on your taking a hard look at the numbers, and a creative look at the product. Invest your sales acumen in the products you would buy for yourself. Focus on products of proven merit, high gravity, and great sales copy. Chucking poorly written products and lazy publishers before you ever get started with them will give you a list of high-potential product and bump your chances of success higher.
